Congregation 89 Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. 90 Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. 91 Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you. 92 If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. 93 I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have preserved my life. 94 Save me, for I am yours; I have sought out your precepts. 95 The wicked are waiting to destroy me, but I will ponder your statutes. 96 To all perfection I see a limit, but your commands are boundless. Samuel Lam 1 During the reign of David, there was a famine for three successive years; so David sought the face of the Lord. The Lord said, “It is on account of Saul and his blood-stained house; it is because he put the Gibeonites to death.” 2 The king summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not a part of Israel but were survivors of the Amorites; the Israelites had sworn to spare them, but Saul in his zeal for Israel and Judah had tried to annihilate them.) 3 David asked the Gibeonites, “What shall I do for you? How shall I make atonement so that you will bless the Lord’s inheritance?” 4 The Gibeonites answered him, “We have no right to demand silver or gold from Saul or his family, nor do we have the right to put anyone in Israel to death.” “What do you want me to do for you?” David asked. 5 They answered the king, “As for the man who destroyed us and plotted against us so that we have been decimated and have no place anywhere in Israel, 6 let seven of his male descendants be given to us to be killed and their bodies exposed before the Lord at Gibeah of Saul—the Lord’s chosen one.” So the king said, “I will give them to you.” 7 The king spared Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the oath before the Lord between David and Jonathan son of Saul. 8 But the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons of Aiah’s daughter Rizpah, whom she had borne to Saul, together with the five sons of Saul’s daughter Merab, whom she had borne to Adriel son of Barzillai the Meholathite. 9 He handed them over to the Gibeonites, who killed them and exposed their bodies on a hill before the Lord. All seven of them fell together; they were put to death during the first days of the harvest, just as the barley harvest was beginning. 15 Once again there was a battle between the Philistines and Israel. David went down with his men to fight against the Philistines, and he became exhausted. 16 And Ishbi-Benob, one of the descendants of Rapha, whose bronze spearhead weighed three hundred shekels and who was armed with a new sword, said he would kill David. 17 But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David’s rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, saying, “Never again will you go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel will not be extinguished.” Sermon .......... David went down with his men to fight against the Philistines, and he became exhausted. 2 Samuel 21:15 King David returns on the battlefield! In previous instances his absence from the battlefield triggered some interesting developments in the story, but now he is back, it shows us we have passed on to another stage of his life. David is no longer the strong warrior he once was. This verse tells us he became exhausted and the next verse tells us David really has aged: David needs his nephew Abishai to rescue him. The impressive young man David, able to kill tens of thousands is no more. Even the strong and powerful cannot withstand the passing of time. Ageing is part of the human experience. God teaches us to number our days. Soon we may not have the strength, energy and possibility to do all we would like to do. And the conclusion of the wisdom book Ecclesiastes reminds us: Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them” (Ecclesiastes 12:1) When we start remembering God in our youth, hopefully we have some wisdom to offer when we grow old. In the household of God we have different generations with different roles and together we are a witness to this world that God has called us together. To the elders in church, Peter said: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care and to the young people he said: submit yourselves to your elders and he adds: All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another. (1 Peter 5:2, 5). Let us all learn to be humble in the household of God. March 2021 Psalm 62:5-8 Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. 6 Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. 7 My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. 8 Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Psalm 62 starts with a similar proclamation as the verses just quoted: 1-2 Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. Sometimes we need to put effort in truly live in the conviction that we find rest in God, we have to exercise our faith and remind ourselves of the truth. By repeating and addressing “my soul” one is reminding oneself how steadfast our God is. And because of God’s faithfulness we can come to Him in prayer! Let us pray for the world and HK:
